Human microbiome plays a pivotal role in infectious diseases. On the one hand, the microbiota can protect the host from infections both by modulating immune responses and by mediating colonization resistance. On the other hand, it can also act as a reservoir for opportunistic microorganisms that can overgrow under varies circumstances, which significantly complicating diseases by contributing to inflammatory immune responses or disrupting intestinal barrier functions. MMC is keen to understand the complex interactions between host and microbiota in different kinds of infections, especially in sepsis, and excavate translational potential of microbiome in preventing or treating those infections.
